From First Frost to First Glow: Designing a Custom Christmas Display in Bergen and Rockland County

How JVS designs a custom Christmas display, from your first quote to the night the lights go on.

A great Christmas display does not happen by accident. It starts with a plan built around your home and ends with the night the lights come on and the whole street notices. Here is how JVS designs a custom display for homes across Bergen County, NJ and Rockland County, NY, from the first quote to that first glow.

Whether your home is in Westwood or New City, the path is the same: share your ideas, choose a style, let us design around your architecture and enjoy a professional install.

Step one: your quote and a first look at your home

Everything begins with your instant quote. Request it online and the estimate arrives in your inbox in 10 to 15 minutes. We prepare it using satellite imaging, and if we cannot get a clear view of your home, we will ask you to email a photo or two.

Your quote includes a digital image of your property, so you can see the plan instead of imagining it. Designs and estimates are free, so it is easy to explore your options. Christmas lighting projects have an $1,800 minimum.

Step two: choose your style

This is the fun part. Your display should look like your home and your taste, not like a template. Not sure where to start? Browse our gallery for finished displays and bring your favorites to the conversation.

Warm white or multicolor

Classic warm white gives a timeless, elegant glow that suits traditional and modern homes alike. Multicolor is bright, playful and nostalgic. Some homeowners choose one look, and others mix them, such as warm white on the roofline and color on the trees.

Where the lights go

Most custom displays combine several of these elements:

  • Roofline lighting outlines the shape of the house and is the foundation of most designs.
  • Trees wrapped or lit from the base give the yard height and depth.
  • Wreaths and greenery add texture and a fresh, finished look at doors, windows and railings.
  • Ground lighting lines walkways and garden beds so the display reaches all the way down to the landscape.

Step three: your home's architecture shapes the design

No two houses are alike, so no two designs should be either. A steep gable calls for a different approach than a long, low roofline. Columns, dormers, shutters, a grand entry and mature trees all give us something to work with.

We look at the lines of the house, how it is seen from the street and where the eye naturally goes, then place lights to highlight the best features. A stone colonial, a modern ranch and an older home with detailed trim would each get a different plan, even with the same lights.

When we plan your display, we look closely at:

  • Rooflines, gables and dormers that define the shape of the house.
  • Windows, doors and porches that frame the entry.
  • Columns, railings and trim worth highlighting.
  • Trees, shrubs and landscaping that carry the display into the yard.

Step four: the professional install

Once the design is approved, our trained crews take over. JVS supplies every product we install, and light cords are custom fit to your building so everything sits neatly and looks intentional. Installation is coordinated around your preferred timeframe, route scheduling, weather and seasonal availability.

As a CLIPA certified company with more than ten years in business, we handle the ladders, the rooflines and the details so you do not have to. You can follow every stage on our Our Process page.

Why custom beats DIY

Hanging lights yourself can be a fun tradition, but a custom, professionally installed display is a different level of result. Here is what you get:

  • Safety. Working on ladders and rooflines in cold weather is the riskiest part of holiday lighting, and trained crews do it for a living.
  • A better fit. Cords are measured and fit to your home, so lines are straight, evenly spaced and tidy.
  • Your time. No tangled strands, no weekend on a ladder and no trips to the store for one more box.
  • Takedown and storage. We remove the display after the season and store it safely, so there is nothing to untangle or pack up in January.

The night the lights go on

After all the planning, this is the payoff. The timers are set, the display is glowing and your home looks the way you pictured it. Neighbors slow down, the kids press their noses to the window and the house finally feels like the holidays.

Timers take care of the rest. Your lights come on at dark and run for the number of hours you choose after dusk, or from dusk to dawn, so the display looks great every evening without you lifting a finger.

From the first frost to that first glow, the whole process is built to be easy for you. Start with a quote, share your ideas and let us take care of the rest.

Can I mix warm white and multicolor lights?

Absolutely. Many homeowners use warm white on the roofline and color on the trees or greenery. Tell us what you picture and we will design around it.
